Nashville Zoo

Yesterday we packed up and went to the Nashville Zoo. I decided on Tuesday that I was taking my girls whether anyone else came or not. They have been promised many things and very few of the promises have been kept. This drives Kale and I crazy, we stick to our word with the kids, always. We are constantly telling my mil to just not promise anything, then if she gets around to taking the kids somewhere it's a nice surprise. Otherwise we have to hear about how "Grammie promised this, or that but we didn't do that." I don't care if they don't do anything but hang out with the girls, just don't make promises you won't keep. Kale has told her this every year since Lilly's been old enough to realize they are doing what Judy promised. It disappoints me.

Okay, I will step down off my soapbox now. We had a really good time at the zoo and both my in-laws came. It was a very nice day, sunny, warm, and breezy. The zoo is relatively new and is still under construction, but it's mostly shaded which was nice. And since we are members of the KC Zoo we were able to get in for free. All it cost us yesterday was gas and food. Of course gas is outrageous and the food is not cheap. $20 for a small pizza, hamburger, fries, 3 bottles of juice, and a coke. I guess that really isn't too bad. I did rent a double stroller too, Aidan is a complainer and sometimes Sophia needs to sit, even if she doesn't want to.

The zoo used to be a 300acre farmstead called Grassmere. One family owned the land for 5 generations. The last family members to live in the house died in the 1990's, they were two sisters who never married and loved animals. It was their last requests that the land be used for some sort of nature sanctuary and not to be turned into an industrial park. The house is still there and we were able to tour it. It was built in 1810 and everything inside it is original to the house including the furnishings. It has never had electricity and only briefly had indoor plumbing, the zoo had the one and only bathroom ripped out it was in such bad shape when they got the land. The outdoor kitchen and smokehouse are still there as well as the outhouse. It was very interesting, the only ones who didn't think so were Sophia and Delilah :P

My mom never promises and usually just shows up and Chris' parents are not really involved. I can't imagine having to deal with that kind of stress. I wish you had come here instead. We would have had a ball. The drive is a bit long. Talk later

I always wait till the last minute to tell Zeze we're doing anything special - that way if for some reason it doesn't pan out, she won't feel upset. While it's okay for kids to be disappointed SOMETIMES (I mean, hey - they can't always get what they want, right?) it's so not cool to keep making promises and breaking them. You lose major trust and cool points for that, and will regret it when they get older and don't believe a word you say.

I agree....I never tell Emma any of our plans until the day they happen. That way, if something does come up and we can't go through with plans, then she isn't disappointed.

I agree too, we never tell them until we are sure it is going to happen. I don't like hearing the "awww man" that comes out and the looks of disappointment on their faces. She actually gets upset with them when they are upset that she didn't do as promised. It's really irritating.

At the end of this trip I am sure Kale is going to have words with her, again. Last year? The same problem. He talked to her about it but it hasn't seemed to stop the unfullfilled promising. I am sure in some why in her mind she blames me. Like I didn't say that I wanted to go, but it's not my deal. I did my part, I planned and executed the zoo. I am not going to sit here everyday and say "didn't you say... or weren't you gonna..." and have her irritated by me.

Although last night I made sure to point out that she hadn't taken them for the walk she told them they'd take after lunch. It was now dinner time when I meantioned it and we did go for a walk. But she would have "forgotten" if I hadn't said anything.

that sounds awesome... all the way around.

well not about the promises unkept... that part sucks. and i would hate that too... kids remember everything. even things they don't talk about or that you think they couldn't possibly remember they do.

i'm glad that you went to the zoo and that your in-laws came with you... it is always nice to have a few extra hands to help out.

totally awesome that you were able to get in FREE since you are a member of the KC zoo... is "member" right?? sounds like you guys are part of the zoo exhibit. lol not what i'm trying to say... but you know what i mean. lol

i think that $20 for all the things you got is really a GREAT price... like almost cheap. I can't remember going to any park/zoo or anything like that and getting that much food for that price. i know at the six flags by us, i think a pizza alone was almost $20. ugh!

it is cool that you get to know the history of the land and the people that owned it... and that you get to tour the house... i love things like that... to see how people lived "back in the day". of course i'd love to be able to just go in random homes now too... i like to see how other people decorate and keep their things and all that... i'm nosey i guess.

anyway...i'm glad that you all had a good day!!
:)

if you have any pics. i'd love to see them.

also i hope you have gotten to talk to Kale recently... you haven't mentioned it but i hope yu have and that all is well with him.

xoxoxoxo
hugs!!
